The Story Behind Sales101

Sales has always been about people.

Explore the Lessons →

Long before sales became a career, I was learning how much business depends on people — how they communicate, what they value, what earns their trust, and what makes them comfortable moving forward.

Over more than three decades in B2B sales and business development, I have worked through the entire selling process: prospecting, opening conversations, developing relationships, discovery, presentations, negotiation, follow-up, and closing. Much of that career was spent selling commercial office equipment and medical dictation systems in highly competitive markets.

That experience taught me something that has stayed consistent regardless of the product, technology, or market: the fundamentals of good selling do not change very much. Buyers still want to be heard. Trust still matters. Timing matters. Good questions matter. And the salesperson who genuinely understands the customer is usually in a much better position than the salesperson who simply knows how to pitch.

“The best sales lessons rarely come from a script. They come from paying attention to people.”
Experience in the Field

Three decades of selling in competitive B2B markets.

The ideas shared on Sales101.org come from firsthand experience working with businesses, decision-makers, hospitals, and complex sales opportunities — not from theory alone.

Turning Experience Into Lessons

Sales101.org brings those decades of experience together in practical articles about sales process, communication, human behavior, buyer psychology, relationships, negotiation, and professional growth.

What I Believe

The principles that continue to hold up.

Tools change. Markets change. Technology changes. But the human side of selling remains remarkably consistent.

Listen before you pitch. The more you understand, the more relevant and useful your recommendation becomes.
Trust is earned.Consistency, honesty, preparation, and follow-through create confidence over time.
Questions create clarity.Good discovery is not interrogation. It is curiosity with a purpose.
Relationships outlast transactions.A long-term customer relationship is worth far more than winning one isolated deal.
Silence has value. You do not always need another sentence. Sometimes the best move is to give the buyer room to think.
Always know the next step.Good sales conversations create clarity about what happens next and who is responsible for it.

Why Sales101.org Exists

To make useful sales experience easier to pass along.

Sales101.org is where I share the lessons I wish every salesperson could have access to early in their career — along with the lessons that become even more valuable after you have been selling for years. Those lessons also form the foundation of my book, The Rhythm of a Sale. My goal is not to offer gimmicks or pressure tactics. It is to help sales professionals understand the fundamentals, think more clearly about the customer, and become better at the human side of selling.

Whether you are beginning a sales career or refining an approach built over decades, there is always another conversation to learn from.

Sales changes with technology. The need to understand people never does.
